Artists Statement
My aesthetic inspires me to balance color and dimension into modern pieces of jewelry.
With no formal art education, I have learnt my craft through numerous short classes with master jewelers around the world and through my own practice. From ancient to modern methods of fabrication, from sawing a flat piece of sheet metal to vitreous enamel and cutting my own stones, to forming and blowing glass; playing with a flame to create a myriad of techniques provides endless fascination for me.
Born in South Africa and now living in California, I began my jewelry design career over 20 years ago. Repetition of form, like those often found in nature and architecture, provides major inspiration for the bold and clean lines of my jewelry. Bright colors are often used and reflect the truly fortunate African influences in my life.
Creating jewelry that can sometimes be subtle and delicate, to be worn every day; or creating more avant garde pieces that make a statement, that say “look at me”. This feeds my restless need to constantly change my creative endeavors. Mostly, I create timeless pieces of jewelry which I hope will be passed from generation to generation.
My latest endeavor to spread the joy of creating jewelry, is a new jewelry teaching studio in the heart of Southern California where we hope to bring in many of the masters in the field of jewelry making and fabrication. For more information please visit the website at www.theloftjewelrystudio.com
